The seventieth and closing conviction in a sweeping New York Metropolis corruption probe was secured on Tuesday, concluding a decade-long bribery scheme during which public housing staff steered work to contractors in change for bribes.

The arrests in February 2024 have been the biggest single-day bribery takedown within the historical past of the U.S. Justice Division, prosecutors mentioned, and targted present and former staff of the New York Metropolis Housing Authority, lots of them former supervisors.

“All 70 charged defendants have now been convicted,” U.S. Legal professional Jay Clayton mentioned in a launch, “for attempting to criminally leverage the contracting process of work for affordable housing for New Yorkers to line their own pockets.”

The defendants typically demanded between 10% and 20% of a contract’s worth, which generally ranged from $500 and $2,000, in response to the discharge.

The housing authority staff pocketed over $2.1 million from bribes paid by firms that acquired $15 million in no-bid contracts, mentioned Commissioner Jocelyn E. Strauber of the town’s Division of Investigation.

The town’s big and ageing public housing system is the biggest within the nation, residence to at least one in 17 New Yorkers in 335 developments citywide. Tenants have complained for many years about harmful or unsanitary situations, together with rodents, mildew, and warmth and scorching water outages.

Of the 70 people charged within the bribery case, three defendants have been convicted at trial, 56 pleaded responsible to felony fees and 11 pleaded responsible to misdemeanor offenses, prosecutors mentioned. The costs included bribery, fraud and extortion.

The housing authority often called NYCHA receives over $1.5 billion in federal funding every year.
